Youth in Care

Youth in Care Group Program

Our Youth in Care group meets twice per month and plans additional social and recreational activities.  The group serves youth 13 to 18 years of age. The purpose of the group is to:

To provide a safe opportunity for youth to share their experiences as youth in care by enhancing peer relationships with other youth in care, through a variety of activities including:

  • Life Skills Training (cooking, budgeting, etc.)
  • Sexual Health
  • Physical Activity and Social Events
  • Group Discussions on Drug and Alcohol Abuse, Violence and Personal Safety

In addition, we have created smaller youth groups are part of this program for emerging needs to address issues like youth at risk of exploitation.

Some of the extra social recreational activities are:

Trips to Toronto for Raptors games, musicals, NHL games, Wonderland, science centre and CNE.  We also provide holiday activities such as Christmas dinner, Valentines parties, etc.  Regular scheduled activities include attending the Galaxy Cinema, Cards and Games nights, Craft nights.

In the future, we would like to see this youth group program network with other local agencies and neighboring Children’s Aid Societies.

We are grateful for our continual financial support provided by the Kawartha-Haliburton Children’s Foundation.

Youth Meeting: Being Safe, Staying Safe

Are you looking for: inspiration, intervention, self-examination for youth at risk?

Are you concerned about: drugs? alcohol? destructive sexual behaviors? harm to others or self?

On Friday March 16th, Kawartha-Haliburton Children’s Aid Society held a one day forum with local youth in care. 30 youth and 12 adults attended.

Andrée Cazabon, former youth in care and ex-street youth turned filmmaker was on site to share her story through her films and her transformation into a youth leader and advocate. From despair to hope, her journey is a catalyst for discussion and transformation with youths .

Andrée lead a discussion with our teens on drug use and  its impact and risk. Andree showed her film  Letters to a Street Child: discussion on drugs, alcohol, self-harm.In the last hour of the afternoon, Andree met privately with a small group of youth who have been recently impacted by violence.  From this discussion, this group recommended to our agency that we work with them to create two youth group programs:

1)   A youth group which meets weekly on drugs an alcohol issues in our community, they asked that this group be run by a counselor from outside of our agency with agency support, a sports component was seen as key to this group; and,

2)   A substance abuse prevention group program be created to work with youth          under the age of 14.
