{"id":468,"date":"2017-02-23T18:27:10","date_gmt":"2017-02-23T18:27:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.khcas.on.ca\/foundation\/?page_id=468"},"modified":"2022-08-18T14:09:33","modified_gmt":"2022-08-18T14:09:33","slug":"foundation-history","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.khcas.on.ca\/foundation\/khcf\/who-we-are\/foundation-history\/","title":{"rendered":"History of the Kawartha-Haliburton Children&#8217;s Foundation"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_753\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-753\" style=\"width: 255px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-753 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.khcas.on.ca\/foundation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2017\/02\/Margaret-Davies-255x300.jpg\" alt=\"A recent photo of smiling KHCF founder, Margaret Davies is shown.\" width=\"255\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.khcas.on.ca\/foundation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2017\/02\/Margaret-Davies-255x300.jpg 255w, https:\/\/www.khcas.on.ca\/foundation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2017\/02\/Margaret-Davies.jpg 298w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 255px) 100vw, 255px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-753\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Margaret Davies &#8211; Founder<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"><strong>Margaret Davies &#8212; The Story Behind the Foundation.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Margaret Davies worked as a Social Worker for the Kawartha-Haliburton Children\u2019s Aid Society from 1983 to 1998. \u202fDuring that time, she noticed that because they often struggled with very difficult circumstances the young people with whom she was involved at work rarely seemed to believe in themselves and few reached their full potential. \u202fAt that time, the norm for the entire agency was for an average of only one young person to transition from KHCAS care to attend college or university every two years.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret believed that children in care needed more opportunities,\u202fearlier on in their lives to be successful. \u202fShe thought one of the first steps in the healing process could be a week at a summer camp, where kids can \u201cjust be kids\u201d. \u202fShe came to believe that summer camp can offer disadvantaged children much more than a vacation. \u202fCamp is also an opportunity to connect with each other as friends, to meet and build relationships with caring adults and counselors, and to discover the inner child they may have long forgotten or never had the opportunity to be.<\/p>\n<p>Building on and adding to her original vision of sending kids to camp, Mrs. Davies founded the Kawartha-Haliburton Children\u2019s Foundation in order to give to more children a fuller childhood experience. \u202f\u202fThe Foundation\u2019s purpose was broadened to offer a range of other life-enriching, positive opportunities like music lessons, participation in sports, dance or art lessons. \u202f In her work with the CAS, Margaret also identified a need to provide funding for the cost of school outings, trips and special occasions from which under-privileged children might otherwise be excluded. \u202fAdded too, was a program to provide Christmas gifts from people in the community to kids who might otherwise receive little or nothing. \u202fStill another program was founded to provide scholarship funding for all youth leaving CAS care to attend post-secondary education.<\/p>\n<p>By providing funding for services to children in the care of the KHCAS, Margaret\u2019s goal was to build up their self-esteem. \u202fAdditionally, creating opportunities for developing relationships with people in the community helps children have a sense of their social value with others, and their place in the world. \u202fThe effectiveness of her supportive giving programs is reflected in the number of young people leaving care to attending higher education and moving on to develop successful careers. \u202fIn 2016, four college students graduated, and nineteen youth received funding assistance for higher education from the Margaret Davies Bursary.<\/p>\n<p>In 1993, Margaret met with a number of her friends in the Kawartha-Haliburton area to discuss the launch of a new major fundraising event for KHCF, to be called the Dream Ball. The response was phenomenal. \u202f Everyone in the community wanted to help raise funds in support of children in need. \u202fThis group of women and men donated hundreds of volunteer hours to make the first Dream Ball fundraiser a success. \u202fFrom sewing props to hanging decorations, obtaining items for the silent auction, to selling tickets \u2013 they did it all! \u202fIn November 1994, the first annual Dream Ball raised $15,000.00 and sent 45 children to summer camp.\u00a0 Every year the Dream Ball grew and was the primary resource for the Summer Camp Program.\u00a0 Recently, the Dream Ball was taken over by the Boys and Girls Club of Lindsay and we receive approximately $10,000 each year.\u00a0\u00a0 To continue supporting the Camp Program at the level the Dream Ball allowed us, we are now involved with Delta Bingo and organize the annual Axe Extravaganza event.<\/p>\n<p>Today we continue to encourage and enable children and youth involved with the Kawartha-Haliburton Children&#8217;s Aid Society to achieve their full potential by providing support for a wide variety of life-enriching programs and experiences, including dance and music lessons, sports activities, summer camp and bursary support for post-secondary education plus supports for youth transitioning to independent living. We aim to help fill the gap, so these children can have the same experiences as their peers. We want to expose them to a variety of life-enriching experiences that help foster feelings of inclusion and belonging plus build self-confidence. These life-enriching experiences fall outside of the funding provided to the Kawartha-Haliburton Children\u2019s Aid Society by the Ministry of Youth and Child Services. We do not receive government funding.
