Nellie Mellish was born and raised in rural Quebec. As a child, Nellie did not have the opportunity to attend school. Later in life, however, Nellie was fortunate enough to be able to provide her own children with the kinds of opportunities that she never had as a child. Thanks to her efforts, Nellie’s daughter fondly remembers music lessons being an integral part of her upbringing.
Music is generally recognized for its therapeutic value, and involvement in its pursuit can only increase self-esteem. Giving children music or dance lessons gives children a lifelong gift.
To celebrate our deep appreciation of over a decade of generous support from Nellie’s daughter and the Glen Colborne Fund at the Toronto Foundation, we are proud to have named our music and dance program after Nellie Mellish. We hope to capture Nellie’s spirit as a hard-working rural Canadian with a passion for the performing arts by providing development opportunities for disadvantaged children and youth to receive training of their choice, to any level.
