Kinship & Alternate Care Awareness Week | September 14–18, 2026
During Kinship & Alternate Care Awareness Week, Kawartha-Haliburton Children’s Aid Society (KHCAS) proudly recognizes the relatives, extended family members, chosen family, friends and community members who step forward to support children, youth and families.
Kinship and alternate care help children and youth remain connected to the people, cultures and communities that shape their identities and strengthen their sense of belonging. These arrangements may help families stay together or provide a safe and caring home when a child or youth cannot safely remain at home.
Kin support takes many forms—from practical assistance and emotional encouragement to advocacy, cultural conn
ection and a safe place to stay. Research shows that broad kin networks are linked with better outcomes and contribute positively to the well-being of children and youth involved with the child welfare system.
To every kinship and alternate caregiver: thank you. Your commitment, compassion and generosity provide stability, connection and care at times when they are needed most. By opening your homes, sharing your time and standing alongside families, you help children and youth maintain meaningful relationships and connections to family, culture, identity and community.
KHCAS is deeply grateful for the essential role you play. We also recognize the extended families, community networks and service partners who surround caregivers with encouragement and support. Together, you create circles of care that help children, youth and families feel connected, supported and valued.
