Legislative and child welfare standards governing Ontario’s children’s aid societies acknowledge the importance of community, heritage, and cultural ties for Indigenous children. First Nations communities in Ontario have long worked to re-gain control over child welfare practices related to their children. The results of their efforts are demonstrated by the existence of nine designated First Nations child welfare agencies and an increasing number of urban Aboriginal Family and Children’s Services. It is the responsibility of the Kawartha-Haliburton Children’s Aid Society to ensure that First Nation communities are involved and making decisions in the best interests of children. KHCAS is one of six children’s aid societies and seven First Nation community signatories to a Protocol that guide child welfare service delivery to Indigenous children and families in the Central East Region.
