Application & Approval Process

  1. Contact the KHCAS to apply to become a foster parent via telephone at 1-800-661-2843.
  2. Someone will contact you to answer any questions you may have and to complete the foster parent inquiry.
  3. Your consent will be requested to start a file for you in our provincial database.
  4. An application will be required including the following documents:
    • A KHCAS records check consent is required for all persons over the age of 18 living in the prospective foster family home.
    • Police background and child welfare checks for all adults living in your home to ensure no history of child abuse or neglect.
    • Consent for five references to be contacted regarding your application to become a foster parent.
    • Medical examination and reference from your doctor for everyone living in your home to ensure applicants are able to care for a child or youth.
    • Consent to complete a driver abstract on all drivers in the home.
    • Proof of ability to provide a safe, supportive, and secure living environment for children, including stable family income.
  5. A KHCAS records check is required for all persons over the age of 18 living in the prospective foster family home.
  6. A criminal record check is required for all those over the age of 18 living in the home.
  7. Five references must be provided by the applicant(s) to support the application to foster.
  8. Medical references must be provided by each applicant and followed up by a medical examination indicating the applicants are able to care for a child or youth.
  9. A KHCAS Resource Worker will be assigned to complete a “First at Home” visit prior to commencing the mandatory PRIDE training.
  10. Upon completion of the mandatory PRIDE training a SAFE home study will be completed.
